Drying Basil

How to Dry Basil

Have extra basil from your Summer garden and not sure what to do with it? I’m sharing some tips to dry and store basil from your garden to enjoy long after the growing season is over!

 Drying Basil

With the help of my video gardening course from Halden Garden, my herb garden is looking so much better than last year! It’s actually to the point now where I have an over abundance of herbs and needed to learn how to dry and store the herbs. So today, I’m sharing what I learned and my process for drying basil with you.

Fresh Basil

After harvesting just above the the division of the stalk, thoroughly wash the basil and allow to dry completely (usually overnight is sufficient).

Next, tie 3 - 5 stems of basil with baker’s twine. Avoid overcrowding with large bundles so the leaves can dry quickly and evenly.

Hang the basil in a warm, dry place. I hang my herbs for drying on my shaker peg rack in my kitchen which gives me lots of room for drying. I love watching the process!

Allow the basil to dry ~2 weeks, then once thoroughly dry separate leaves from the stem. Break into small pieces and store in an airtight container. Ball Mason Jars with wood lids are my favorite containers for herbs. The basil will keep for 6 months to 1 year so you can enjoy until the next growing season!

I have a video of the process here on Instagram so head there if you’d like to see the process in action! Let me know if you dry any herbs and be sure to tag me in your social media posts!
